The Oscars: Hits and Misses

Award season culminated last night with the Oscars and the fashion did not disappoint! As fascinating as the actual award show is, I am always more tuned into the red carpet couture. All photos courtesy of US Weekly.

My Hits:

My Misses:

Designers (from left): Andrew Gn | Gucci | Prada | Marchesa | Chanel Haute Couture | Atelier Versace |Oscar de la Renta | Marchesa | Galvan | Louis Vuitton | Ralph Lauren

This year, it was hard to categorize the fashion into what worked and what didn’t. Of course, Joy and I were plotting how we could some day attend this glamorous evening. This guide, catered towards the Met Gala, pretty much sums it up:

We’re going to start with tickets to a Boston gala and go from there 🙂

Stay tuned!

Wardrobe Wed: Blazin’

Can you feel it? Spring is just around the corner!

Today I am keeping it light with soft creams and a relaxed blazer. Broad shoulders can make it difficult to wear jackets of all kinds and not feel robotic with limited movement. This light-weight H&M find is comfortable and easy to wear all day long.

It’s a 13 hour day for Joy, filled with student appointments, and lots of hustle and bustle in between.  The day will not end at 5 as she is hosting an evening reception following work. Lots of running around, checking in attendees, and colorful chats with students and guests throughout the night.

What’s a girl to wear? Vince Camuto to the rescue!  Joy paired her favorite Vince Camuto slacks with an orange shell and black blazer.  A fun gold necklace added a little shine to the bold color.

You Better Work

9 degrees in Boston means a Florida inspired #flashbackfriday

Working out during business trips can be tough. The indoor gyms of most hotels are cramped and don’t inspire much motivation to break a sweat, and depending on where you are your outdoor exercise options can vary.

Thankfully, my last trip to Florida I had some great weather and could run outdoors. I wasn’t sure where I was going but was told there was a marina about 1.5 miles from where I was staying. Perfect!

Taking time during travel to be active helps keep my mind clear and my health goals in check. I am headed back to Florida next week and can’t wait to see where my running shoes take me next 🙂

Runway to the Everyday: RED for Work

Celebrity styles inspire everyday looks.  For the everyday girl like me on a non-profit professional’s budget, I stick to a few stores that align with my personal style aesthetic so I can incorporate glamorous celebrity looks into my ready to wear lifestyle.

Watch is a strong word,  I am in the room while the Super Bowl is on.  I love the food and the performances.  I also love chatting with people who are so passionate and who get as excited about sports as I do for award season.

Lady Gaga blew all of us away as she performed the National Anthem.  The red sequin suit was the perfect choice for this performance.  While a full sequin pant suit is probably a bit much for the office, a bright color or a print can definitely make an appearance at certain work functions.

  1. Hosting or attending a work dinner.  Dinners are still professional events but there is a social aspect to meals so bring a little color to the dinner table.
  2. Receiving an award or honor.  You’re the star, you will be photographed.  Pick a color that flatters you and stands out.
  3. Speaking at a conference or giving a talk.  Being invited to speak at an event or facilitating a conference session is a big deal.  Complement your words with a fun color and receive compliments on your words and your outfit!

Beer Fest Babe

Gear’s interests are very…singular. OK, even writing that felt a bit creepy (gold star for anyone who can guess the movie reference)!

But really, Gear has maybe one or two hobbies that he really enjoys. One is food and the other is beer. He loves brewing it, drinking it, and talking about it with his beer lovin’ pals.

Tonight I will be attending my first Extreme Beer Fest with Gear and a few friends. His guest list of people he would go with is very exclusive so why am I going? Well, this year the men would like their ladies to experience their “mecca” and before I knew it tickets were purchased and it was added to the shared calendar.

I will be going straight from work so packed my “Extreme Beer Fest Casual Chic” outfit (if such a thing exists) to switch into later. Now, the bottom half was a piece of cake – jeans and ankle boots but because I am as indecisive as they come, I brought four different tops to choose from.

The candidates:

Fabulous Casual Friday

56418741

The rise of the laid back look has permeated the workplace.  The old norm was business professional four days a week and jeans on Friday.  These days, many office cultures have a casual Friday vibe Monday-Friday.  Whether it’s one day a week or a regularly accepted look, bringing denim into the office requires just as much thought as business professional attire.

Blazers elevate jeans and your work mind mentality.

Thursday Threads: So Very French

It’s gloomy out and today I will be glued to my desk with a pile of follow-up research/emails/phone calls. Not a terrible way to spend the day, but definitely not glamorous.

I went with a simple A-line striped dress that has just the right amount of structure and give. Its classic black and white pattern needed some pop so I paired with a bright red patent leather belt and my two toned ankle boots.

I am over the moon about the #bodypositivity changes Barbie is rolling out.  Last year, the Imagine the Possibilities campaign encouraging all the career possibilities that Barbie can represent.  This message is incredibly important to hear as early on as possible.  I love that Barbie is kicking things into gear and creating more realistic and more representative dolls that everyday girls can relate too.

Here are some fabulous outfits from the “Reshape the Conversation” dinner.

I found a more casual style of Queen Latifah’s jacket at Lord & Taylor, perfect for a weekend look.  The pale pink dress has a similar neckline to Gwen Stefani’s cocktail dress which would be lovely for a spring/summer wedding shower, christening, or graduation.  Amanda de Cadenet’s black cocktail dress has Girl’s Night written all over it.  I love cocktail dresses with long sleeves and found one at  White House Black Market.
