Wardrobe Wed: Light Layers

Day 7 of a heat wave + an industrial AC system = layers upon layers for work!

Not wanting to be too restricted I MacGuyver’d my white drape cardigan into a wrap shirt with the help of two small safety pins. The drapes fell perfectly over my tuxedo pants:

The scarf is a gift from Gear that he picked out on a previous business trip to Paris – one of my favorite pieces!  It added both color and an extra layer against my chilly office. I paired with sleel black heels:

Let’s see how many transitions I make today from being completely bundled up to loosing some layers 🙂

Pinsperation: Summer Dress Code

This morning my inbox was greeted with a much-anticipated, glorious announcement: Summer dress code is now in session!

As always, Pinterest helped me determine some summer styles:

Pops of Color | Comfortable fabrics | Opened-toed sandals | Minimal accessories

“Less is more” to beat the summer heat!

These looks and more can be seen on our Pinterest board “Just Another Day at the Office”.

Wardrobe Wed: Denim Dress

There is something incredibly satisfying about a fabric that is both structured and light weight. Denim does both.

I went full pastel with a multi-strand pink pearl necklace, pearl and diamond ring and pointed pumps:

Did I mention this dress has pockets? Love!

Wardrobe Wed: Floral Done Differently

How does one pull off a college t-shirt with everyday work attire?

The University is hosting a campus wide giving challenge and these bad boys were given out in exchange for a donation (of any size):

I chose to dress up this colorful tee with a simple skirt and fun flats.

The skirts dark grey color grounds an otherwise flashy outfit. I am in LOVE with the flats (a new spring purchase from Payless). They are the epitome of comfort and have just the right punch of color for work!

Joy is rocking a different kind of floral with this print chiffon blouse.  She loves this particular print because the cream and brown design is set against a black background so she can still wear her favorite black slacks.  Comfortable business casual was the goal today with back to back to back …to back practice interviews with students all day long!

I predict many more floral pieces in our future!

Patterned Pant

I have just started exploring the cropped pants arena and by “exploring” I mean one day I bought three different pants on a whim and have been terrified to wear them since.

Jeans; No problem. Leggings; I would wear them every day if I could. Ankle pants; It’s like I forgot how to dress myself.

After staring at them endlessly for the past three weeks, today I finally said “get over it, Alice” and pulled put out these navy + white geometric patterned pants from Gap:

They are so comfortable. Like leggings that are way cuter and can be work at work. With a busy pattern on bottom, I chose low-key accessories:

Black ballet flats by Dexflex Comfort | Vintage pearl + cerulean stone necklace

Did I just become a full-blown pants convert? If so, you’ve been warned!

Wardrobe Wed: Blazin’

Can you feel it? Spring is just around the corner!

Today I am keeping it light with soft creams and a relaxed blazer. Broad shoulders can make it difficult to wear jackets of all kinds and not feel robotic with limited movement. This light-weight H&M find is comfortable and easy to wear all day long.

It’s a 13 hour day for Joy, filled with student appointments, and lots of hustle and bustle in between.  The day will not end at 5 as she is hosting an evening reception following work. Lots of running around, checking in attendees, and colorful chats with students and guests throughout the night.

What’s a girl to wear? Vince Camuto to the rescue!  Joy paired her favorite Vince Camuto slacks with an orange shell and black blazer.  A fun gold necklace added a little shine to the bold color.

Fantastic food. 70 degrees and sunny. Not a bad way to spend the work week!

Runway to the Everyday: RED for Work

Celebrity styles inspire everyday looks.  For the everyday girl like me on a non-profit professional’s budget, I stick to a few stores that align with my personal style aesthetic so I can incorporate glamorous celebrity looks into my ready to wear lifestyle.

Watch is a strong word,  I am in the room while the Super Bowl is on.  I love the food and the performances.  I also love chatting with people who are so passionate and who get as excited about sports as I do for award season.

Lady Gaga blew all of us away as she performed the National Anthem.  The red sequin suit was the perfect choice for this performance.  While a full sequin pant suit is probably a bit much for the office, a bright color or a print can definitely make an appearance at certain work functions.

  1. Hosting or attending a work dinner.  Dinners are still professional events but there is a social aspect to meals so bring a little color to the dinner table.
  2. Receiving an award or honor.  You’re the star, you will be photographed.  Pick a color that flatters you and stands out.
  3. Speaking at a conference or giving a talk.  Being invited to speak at an event or facilitating a conference session is a big deal.  Complement your words with a fun color and receive compliments on your words and your outfit!

Thursday Threads: So Very French

It’s gloomy out and today I will be glued to my desk with a pile of follow-up research/emails/phone calls. Not a terrible way to spend the day, but definitely not glamorous.

I went with a simple A-line striped dress that has just the right amount of structure and give. Its classic black and white pattern needed some pop so I paired with a bright red patent leather belt and my two toned ankle boots.

Wardrobe Wed: Fire & Ice

Happy Wednesday from sunny Florida! One of the perks of my new job is that I have the pleasure of traveling to the sunshine state. Nothing better than escaping the Boston chill with a quick trip to Miami and Naples 🙂

80 degrees and sunny means that I can break out my sleeveless blouses and pack a cardigan *just in case* it gets too cool. In HEAVEN!

Today I am fully representing BU’s colors with a red and white geometric sleeveless blouse (with a white beaded neckline) paired with a simple black pencil skirt. I finished the look with a black patent leather belt and nude pumps.

It’s a pretty normal day for Joy today.  In student affairs what is normal really?!  Meeting with lots of students during appointments, assisting the drop-in students as quickly as possible.. is that it today? Joy stepped a little out of her usual solid color pallet and went with a print chiffon Ann Taylor blouse.  Joy Loves this particular print because the cream and brown floral design is set against a black background so she can still wear her favorite black slacks from Lord & Taylor.
